Delta 24 Hours Cancellation Policy

Booking a flight in today’s world has become such an easy aspect, unlike before where people had to physically purchase tickets from the airlines concerned. Everything can be done from the convenience of our home. The same goes for the cancellation of a flight as well. Whether there is a change in the destination or a complete change of plans, flights are cancelled for a number of reasons. 24 Hours cancellation policy of Delta airlines is almost same like all the major airlines cancellation policy. The customer’s cancellation options depend upon the booked tickets. If the tickets are booked under economy class, then there are not many options available for cancellation. However, for a booking of a higher class, there are certain benefits available.

For airline companies such as Delta Airlines, the basic amenities available on e-ticket is the 24-hour risk-free cancellation policy. This policy allows passengers to cancel their tickets online that have been booked online by using the delta website or by using the delta mobile app called Fly Delta app within 24 hours of its purchase. Under this policy, the customer gets a complete refund of the booked tickets without being charged any additional fees upon cancellation.  

Types Of Delta Airlines Tickets & Their Cancellation Process

There are two types of tickets available while booking a flight, namely – Refundable tickets and Non-refundable tickets. Refundable tickets are used to get the complete refund of the flight booking without any fee deductions. The refund can be processed after the cancellation is completed. The steps to cancel a refundable ticket are as follows:

  • Visit the official website of Delta Airlines or download the Fly Delta mobile app.
  • Select Your Trip after log in, and then proceed to My Trips option.
  • The list of your current bookings will be available on-screen. Select the booking that you wish to cancel.
  • Once selected booking is confirmed, click on the ‘Modify Flight’ button on the screen.
  • Then click on the ‘Start Flight Cancellation’ option to begin the final cancellation process.
  • Then follow the instructions on the screen to successfully cancel the booking.

Once this cancellation process is finished, the customer can then apply for a refund on the booking. The customer has to fill up a form provided by the airlines to apply for a refund. After the submission processing of this form, the customer will receive a refund in the same mode of payment as the one which was used during the booking process.

Refunds are processed by the airlines as soon as they receive the cancellation request. It usually takes some time to issue the amount to be refunded. The time taken to move the funds back to the customer through the same mode of payment is 7 working days. If the mode of payment is credit card, or net banking, etc. If the mode of payment while booking the ticket was cash or cheque, then the procedure can take an extended period of time to be completed. The usual time span to receive refunds via cash or cheque payment methods is within 20 working days. 

For a non-refundable ticket, a cancellation fee is charged from the fare. This is when the ticket is cancelled after the 24-hour policy. After the deduction of the fees, the remaining amount of the fare is provided in the form of credit called e-credit. The customer can use these e-credits on future bookings from Delta airlines.

The process of cancellation of a Non-refundable ticket is as follows:

  • Go to the website or the Fly Delta mobile app and complete the log in the procedure, then go to the My Trips option.
  • A list of all the current bookings will appear on the screen. Select the booking you wish to cancel by clicking on it.
  • Then press the “Cancel Flight” option given at the bottom of the screen and complete the remaining steps.

Even for Non-refundable tickets, there are means to get value out of them. The ticket booked by the customer can be rescheduled after cancellation. By rescheduling the ticket, the customer can use the ticket to travel on the same route only if the claim is made within 1 year of booking the ticket. There could be some minor charges associated with rescheduling and using the same ticket again.

For international destinations, the tickets can be reissued to the same destination, or the customer can change the destination and reissue the ticket within 1 year of issuing the initial ticket. In case any unfortunate event occurs with the customer, in such cases the customer can provide the requested proof and they can receive the refund. 

How to cancel delta flight within 24 hours?

To avail of the 24-hour risk-free policy, there is a set of instructions that has to be followed. The policy, as the name suggests, is only available within the 24-hour time frame from the time of booking. Hence any sudden change of plans within this time frame can be covered by the policy.

The steps to cancel a booking under the 24-hour risk-free policy is more or less similar to the normal cancellation procedure. Clients can visit the official website of Delta Airlines and check the status of their flights. They can also initiate the flight cancellation option on this website or they could also do the same by downloading the official mobile application of Delta Airlines. All you need to do is fill in your flight details and track your booking made. Click on the “Cancel Flight” option and the command will be processed. The refund of fare on the tickets will be sent to the customer via the same mode of payment used during the booking of the tickets.

If the mode of payment is net banking, then the customer must also be aware of the bank’s policies on refunds, since some banks demand additional verification to process the funds.

How much does it cost to cancel a Delta flight Within 24 Hours Of Booking?

This is the most asked question by the customers who wish to cancel their booking due to a change in the plans.

When the booking for a seat is made under any airlines, the concerned firm has to arrange for all the on-flight facilities including food, entertainment, etc. These arrangements on the flight cost the airlines a certain amount, depending on the class of booking. Hence when the booking is cancelled under 24 hours, the airlines can resale the ticket to another customer and safely protect the airline’s interest. However, when the cancellation is made after the required time frame, the airlines cannot sell the ticket and the seat has to go empty. Because of this, the airlines incur a substantial loss on the seat.

Hence during the booking of tickets, they provide Refundable and Non-refundable options. The refundable tickets cost more than the Non-refundable tickets and hence the airlines can have insurance on booking. Since the Non-refundable tickets are available at a cheaper rate, the airline has to charge a cancellation fee to make up for the costs spent on the on-board facilities.

The cost of cancellation of a booking for a Non-refundable ticket starts from $200 and can range all the way up to $500 depending on the distance of the flight. For cancellation of tickets under the economy class, the Delta flight cancellation policy available in the 24-hour risk-free policy. After the 24-hour time slot, cancellations cannot be processed. There is no fee charged during the 24-hour time slot but after the time slot, the cancellation options for economy class fare tickets are unavailable.

If the customer wishes to change the flight, they can do so if they have the appropriate ticket option selected. If the customer has purchased a Non-Refundable ticket and wishes to change the flight, they will have to pay a fee which is between $200 and $500. In addition to this fees they also have to pay the fare charges depending upon the destination, if there is a price difference in the fares of the initial ticket and the new destination ticket.

To change the flight with Delta airlines, the customer must follow the following instructions:

  • Go to the website or the Fly Delta mobile app and complete the log in the procedure, then go to the My Trips option
  • The list of all your current flight bookings will appear on the screen. Select the flight for which you wish to change the destination
  • Then select the ‘Modify Flight’ option by clicking on it.
  • Once you select that option, ‘Start Flight Change’ button will appear on the screen, select by clicking on it.
  • Pick the new flight that you wish to take and reissue with this ticket
  • Finish the booking and if there is any difference in the fare, the value will be shown on the screen, the customer must pay the Delta Airlines change fee and the fare difference (if there is any shown on the screen)
